Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Taxi Task Team has arrested three men wanted for taxi-related murders in the province, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that two suspects were nabbed in the Nyoni area, north of Durban, for the shooting of taxi owner Sizwe Khumalo, 31.

He was shot dead at KwaMathonsi bus stop in iSithebe near Mandeni on March 27, 2015.

Zwane said a case of murder had been opened at Nyoni Police Station and the docket was transferred to the Provincial Taxi Task Team for further investigation.

"On 9 February 2016, members followed-up on information that led them to Nyoni area where they arrested two suspects both aged 32.

"One of the suspects was also wanted for a warrant of arrest that was issued against him after he failed to appear in court for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

"The second suspect was arrested because his licensed firearm, which was seized during the incident, was positively linked to the murder case."

Both suspects appeared in the Eshowe Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and were remanded in custody until 17 February.

In a separate operation, the KZN Task Team arrested a 'most wanted' suspect for the murder of Delani Mathonsi, 50, who was killed in the Pomeroy area.

Zwane said Mathonsi, a taxi owner, and a friend were attacked in his vehicle on September 16, 2015.

"It is alleged that the suspects, who were... in their vehicle, drove past the victim's vehicle and started to shoot towards the victims. Mathonsi died at the scene and his friend was seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

"Local police were called to attend the scene and the description of the suspects was given to them. Mlayezeni Khumalo, 40, was immediately arrested in the area and was found with R-1 rifle suspected to [have been] used in the shooting.

"Khumalo is still in custody for murder and attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm. The docket was then handed over to the Provincial Task Team for further investigation.

"The highly skilled members followed-up information and pounced on the second suspect whilst he was attending another case at Cleveland Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on 5 February. He was brought back to the province and charged for murder and attempted murder."
