Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is considering legal action in a bid to resolve the longstanding conflict between the KwaNdengezi and Zwelibomvu taxi associations.

Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu said he had directed the department’s legal unit to explore legal avenues available to government to enforce stability in the taxi industry in KwaNdengezi and Zwelibomvu, west of Durban.

Mchunu addressed the two associations following recent violence that claimed the lives of five people. The latest killing happened on Tuesday, Mchunu said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We cannot allow illegal operations in KwaNdebengezi and Zwelibomvu. Unfortunately, all processes and mechanisms that we have put into place to ensure smooth operations in this area have not been adhered to.

"This has resulted in the death of many people, including a passenger. This situation cannot be tolerated."

Following a meeting on Tuesday, it was decided to deploy police to the area to protect commuters and property. It was resolved that taxi violence cases be investigated by a specialised team.

Mchunu said government was running out of patience for illegal operators who destabilised the industry and perpetuated violence.
