Pietermaritzburg - The decomposing body of a man, believed to be in his mid-forties, was discovered in a room he was renting in Pietermaritzburg’s CBD on Tuesday night.

It is believed the body lay in the room for at least a week before a neighbour noticed a swarm of flies on the windows and an odour coming from the room at a property in Boom Street.

uMgungundlovu South police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said an inquest docket had been opened.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said she last saw the man alive a week ago. “Most of us living here leave for work very early in the morning and only return late in the evening. We rarely see each other,” she said.

According to the witness, the man worked at the Cascades Mall.

“He was living alone and he preferred spending most of his time in his room.

“But when I noticed a large number of flies on his window I became suspicious. When I approached the door, I was struck by a very bad smell coming from the house.

“When I tried to open the door it was locked. I called the landlord and he came with a spare key. When we opened the door we found him dead. He was lying on his bed,” she said.
