Pietermaritzburg - A dozen armed robbers held up a group of security guards before bombing two ATMs in Ixopo on Tuesday morning.

Police are on the hunt for the gang who escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, leaving the security guards unscathed. It is believed the gang, of about 15 men, arrived at the Shoprite centre in a Ford Ranger bakkie at about 2 am yesterday.

The men threatened the guards at gunpoint before taking their cellphones and hand radios.

The group then split up, some placing themselves at strategic lookout points while the others proceeded to rob the Standard Bank ATMs.

The men allegedly bombed two ATMs with explosives and made off with a large sum of cash.

It is believed the men may have escaped in three vehicles.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the incident took place in Margaret Street and police are investigating a case of business robbery and malicious damage to property. He said no injuries, had been reported.
