Cape Town – Teaching resumed at four Lavender Hill schools on Wednesday after principals closed doors during shootings in the area last week.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the reopening followed a meeting between the schools and police to resolve the situation.

Nobody was arrested in the "random" shootings that did not take place on the schools' properties, but within earshot of anxious teachers and pupils.

Lavender Hill High School, Levana Primary School, Hillwood Primary School and Prince George Primary School were all closed.

Van Wyk said that violence erupted on May 22 between three rival gangs in the Steenberg area.

"This forced teachers and learners not to go to schools for fear of their safety," he explained.

The shootings took place when pupils travelled to and from school.

Although they are not targeted at pupils or teachers, parents who have to go to work are worried about whether their children will be safe walking to school and back.

Extra police forces were deployed in the Steenberg area to help keep the schools safe, said Van Wyk.
