Cape Town – Leah Tutu is recovering well in hospital after undergoing a hip operation this week, her daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu van Furth, has confirmed.

Her husband, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was at her side, holding her hand for support after the surgery on Monday.

"It is hip surgery so the arthritis of old age was catching up with her so ja, she is not a spring chicken either," Tutu van Furth told News24Video with a laugh.

Leah Tutu is 83 years old.

Last month her husband celebrated his 85th birthday by presiding over Eucharist at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town.

The "Arch" underwent a surgical procedure to address the cause of recurring infections resulting from past treatment received for prostate cancer.

He went back to hospital as a precaution after his surgical wound showed signs of infection. In September he was discharged to recover at home.

Tutu van Furth said he too was doing well.

"He's beginning to get back into his own personal rhythm of life. It's slow going. I think he is so accustomed to bouncing back from things and the recognition that yes, your body ages, the bounce doesn't quite bounce as fast."
