Cape Town - Government on Friday encouraged South Africans to rally behind Caster Semenya before her attempt to bring home a gold medal in the finals of the 800m at the Olympics.

Semenya finished first in her semi-final on Friday morning with a time of 1m 58.15s.

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Susan Shabangu, wished Semenya and the rest of South Africa's participants in the games the best of luck.

"Caster, who is highly favoured to win gold, is an influence and role model to the girl child who has an interest in sport. [She] will definitely be one of South Africa's shining stars."

Semenya's race is scheduled for Sunday morning at 02:15.
