Pietermaritzburg - There is a tongue-in-cheek plan to portray the problem of potholes in Hilton using a little bit of creativity and a camera lens.

The brainchild of Hilton resident Charles Webster, the “Great Hilton Pothole Picture Competition” was started on Wednesday as a challenge which hopes to add a positive spin on the scourge of potholes in the area.

But it is not all fun and games. The initiative also calls on residents to e-mail the uMngeni Municipality with their concerns, in a bid to get potholes in Hilton fixed.

The challenge is simple: find a pothole in the Hilton area, use props creatively to construct a scene setting, and snap a picture.

Webster said although pictures should be of a reasonable quality, the competition will be judged on the creativity of the content rather than photographic technique.

Dozens of Hilton residents have showed interest in the competition on Facebook and some, according to Webster, have already e-mailed the municipality.

“I saw similar pictures on Facebook and I thought it would be good to turn something negative into a little bit of fun for everyone,” Webster said.

Also the administrator of the “Hilton Chat” group on Facebook, Webster said he had noticed residents wanting to address serious problems in the area, one of which was potholes.

“I think this is a great idea for a positive spin. It may not be a serious competition but it is also quite practical,” Webster said.

Entrants can submit up to two photographs which may be digitally enhanced but not manipulated. Each entry should be e-mailed together with the competitor’s name, address, contact number and where in Hilton the photo was taken.

Webster can be contacted at

The competition closes at midday on Monday, November 30, after which the photographs will be judged by a panel and prizes will be given to the winner, runner-up and second runner-up.
