Polokwane – The Limpopo education department will undergo a serious overhaul, Premier Stan Mathabatha said on Friday.

Delivering the State of the Province address, Mathabatha said the education department was one of five departments placed under administration by Cabinet in 2011.

Four departments had since been returned to Mathabatha’s administrators, but  Cabinet was still not pleased with the financial status of the education department.

Challenges for the department included the supply chain and the overall management of finances.

Mathabatha has given education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe and head of department Morebudi Thamaga the task of repairing the department’s financial woes by restructuring the unit.

“We are restructuring the entire supply chain, including the financial management division, to ensure a proper system is in place," Mathabatha said.

He said financial audit outcomes clearly showed that the department was failing to manage its finances and needed intervention.
