Tzaneen - A suspected housebreaker was killed by a mob in Tickyline Village near Tzaneen after a pensioner was robbed on Tuesday morning.

Tzaneen police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the deceased, together with another man, allegedly broke into the pensioner's home at about 02:30 and attacked the victim, while demanding money.

Community members responded to the victim's loud screams, and they came in "large numbers" to help, police said.

"They caught the deceased and assaulted him. He died on the scene, but his accomplice managed to run away."

The deceased had been identified as Modibe Rakgoale of Madeira Village, in the Sekororo area.

Ngoepe said no one had yet been arrested for Rakgoale's murder. The investigation was continuing.

The police condemned the vigilante attack in the strongest terms. "Please stop this tendency, because it is damaging the relations between communities and police relations to fight crime effectively."
