Burgersfort - A cash-in-transit heist was foiled in Limpopo on Saturday morning when police intercepted the armed robbers in the act.

They were attempting to force the cash van off the road when a police vehicle arrived on the scene close to Steelbridge near Burgersfort, said spokesperson Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

He said three cars - an Audi A4, a Mecedes Benz and a Ford Ranger - had driven right up to the car carrying cash and the Mercedes rammed it.

The driver of the cash car lost control and swerved out of the road. At the same time the three cars stopped and the gang jumped out and started running towards the cash car.

“Before they could start with any activities of getting cash, a police car arrived and they started shooting at the police while they were running away, and the police retaliated,” said Ngoepe.

While they were running away they robbed a traffic policeman, who had been doing point duty nearby, of his firearm. They hijacked another Mercedes Benz passing the scene.

Firearm stolen

Some got into that Mercedes, and others in the remaining cars and they sped off.

All three of the vehicles were recovered a few kilometres from the scene.

Inside the Audi and the Ranger police found a generator, a grinding machine and a firearm.

The first Mercedes Benz, the Audi, and the Ranger had also been reported stolen. Another firearm was found in the first Mercedes Benz.

There was no fatalities or injuries, and no money was taken. Only the traffic officer's firearm was stolen.

Ngoepe said a manhunt was underway.
