Phalaborwa - Limpopo police shot dead two men who escaped from custody in Phalaborwa, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Police tracked the two to the Talana hostel in Tzaneen on Monday, and a shootout ensued, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.

Papiki Mashapo, 23, died on the scene. The second man, Thomas Maowash, 23, was found dead with gunshot wounds later.

A third man, Benny Mathaba, 24, was still at large.

The three escaped from the Phalaborwa police station last Thursday, after overpowering police officers who were bringing them food in the cells.
