Mookgopong - Police had to escort Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha from the Mookgopong Stadium where a crowd of protesters confronted him.

Protesters demanded that police not form part of the mass gathering after a local township resident was shot and killed, allegedly at the hands of a private security guard on Monday.

Mathabatha, MEC Makoma Makhurupetje and Mookgopong Mayor Sara Monyamane had intended to address the crowd.

When a scuffle broke out, a war of words erupted between police and protesters, prompting guards to step in to steer Mathabatha, Makhurupetje and Monyamane to safety.

Residents have been protesting since Friday about what they say has been a lack of service delivery. They are demanding that Monyamane resign.
