Polokwane - A Limpopo taxi driver was shot and killed on Sunday by a fellow driver in what is suspected to be a flare up of violence over Limpopo taxi routes, police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old driver was murdered at a traffic light behind the Seshego police station, near Polokwane, on Sunday.

A 30-year-old taxi driver was arrested in connection with the shooting.

The killing comes weeks after a taxi was set alight during a bitter feud between taxi operators in the same area.

Police said that during Sunday's incident the two taxi drivers started assaulting each other and one pulled out a firearm and shot his rival.

"Two taxis stopped at a red [traffic light] and a driver who was at the back alighted, ran to the one in the front, slapped the other driver... and later produced a firearm and shot him to death at a close range while he was still behind the steering wheel," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoape said.

The gunman was arrested.

"During the arrest, the following was confiscated: one 7.65mm pistol with one magazine, two live rounds and one empty cartridge," Ngoape said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate's Court soon.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, but road rage could not be ruled out.

Investigations are continuing.
