Polokwane – A minibus taxi industry hitman has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Limpopo High Court for the murder of a taxi operator 13 years ago, police said on Wednesday.

Samuel Tshilambavuma was found guilty of shooting dead Danny Baloyi, 39, at Ga-Madiba village outside Mokopane in 2004, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.

Baloyi was a taxi operator in Mokopane. He took his minibus for repairs at a scrapyard and, while waiting for it to be fixed, Tshilambavuma and another man arrived and opened fire. Baloyi was hit and died on the scene. Two people were seriously injured.

The murder was the result of conflict between two taxi associations in the Mokopane area. Tshilambavuma's accomplice was still on the run.

The court sentenced Tshilambavuma to life imprisonment for murder and 30 years for two counts of attempted murder. He got six years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and three years for unlawful possession of ammunition. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba expressed concern about ongoing taxi violence in the province.
