Polokwane - One man was arrested and a consignment of contraband cigarettes worth over R250 000 was seized in Modimolle on Friday, Limpopo traffic police said.

Traffic officers on patrol tried to pull over a car, but the driver sped off, spokesperson Kagiso Mootane said.

"They chased the man until the vehicle had a blowout and then the driver fled on foot. They searched the car and found the consignment of cigarettes,” she said.

While officers were busy with the car, they noticed a bakkie that had been following them.

“The occupants of the bakkie fired shots at the traffic police and then sped off. Officers gave chase until the bakkie ran out of fuel. The driver and the passenger fled on foot.”

One of the bakkie's occupants was caught, although he denied having been in the vehicle.

“Don’t think because it is Easter we don’t have road blocks. We are watching the roads in Limpopo,” she said.
