Northam - A Northam Platinum mineworker was shot dead, resulting in clashes between rival unions, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Mthetheleli Zefunele, 45, a National Union of Mineworkers' member, was shot in the head at a four-way stop in Northam around 15:20 on Sunday, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

The killer then ran away.

Members of NUM and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union were clashing on the Northam/Thabazimbi road near the Railway Gate since Monday morning, Otto said.

Public order police were being sent to the area and motorists were advised to use other routes.
