Polokwane - A woman, believed to be the mother of a newborn baby found dumped in a pit toilet in Morebeng, Limpopo, was arrested on Monday, police said.

The baby girl miraculously survived the incident after another woman heard the child crying from deep inside the pit and called the police on Sunday afternoon.

While the details surrounding the woman's arrest were not immediately clear, police said the the woman suspected of being the baby's mother was 44-years-old.

"She [the mother] is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital under police guard. She will appear in court as soon as she is released from hospital," the police said in a statement.

On Sunday, Colonel Ronel Otto said paramedics and police officers had been involved in rescuing the baby from the pit latrine.

She was taken to the Botlokwa hospital and was reportedly doing well, Otto said at the time.
