Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane, will host a media briefing at 18:00 tonight to address the university protests.
Wits will decide whether the campus will be shut down.
When asked by News24 if Wits was considering the possibility of
closure, Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel said, "They are meeting at 5pm to
discuss. They are also trying to mediate this afternoon but I will let you know
if there are any developments on that front."
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says for the first time in South Africa's history there's a likelihood that no new doctors will be entering the field due to on-going student protests, EWN reported.
Six arrested UCT students are being released without being charged.
Their attorney Lufuno Musetsho said on Tuesday that the students were in the process of being released from the Claremont police station after spending the night in the station's holding cells.
UCT Vice Chancellor Max Price has said the university will remain open despite student demands that a 'TRC' process first be conducted for expelled, suspended and arrested students.
Price told the media in Cape Town on Tuesday that talks between the university and student leaders broke down on Sunday over the reopening of the university this week.
Library at Rhodes University closed.
Students and police clashed as Wits University reopened its doors on Tuesday, with News24 journalist Lizeka Tandwa among those injured.
"I fell and I was caught between police and students."Tandwa was taken to hospital after she was hit by a brick during the clash.
