Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association head Kebby Maphatsoe says that camouflage-clad members protecting the ANC’s Luthuli House headquarters are merely following orders given by President Jacob Zuma in 2012.

"In 2012 during our conference in Bisho, President Jacob Zuma gave MKMVA the battle orders, and one of those orders was to protect the black, green and gold [the ANC] at all costs.

"We are implementing those instructions by the president, at all times military veterans will be at the forefront of the defending the ANC and it’s leadership," he said.

Former Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola has likened the heavy police presence outside ANC headquarters for the #OccupyLuthuliHouse protest to events that lead to the Marikana tragedy in 2012.

"[It's shocking that] the ANC would allow the serious kind of abuse of state power and security because those were the kinds of scenes seen before people were massacred in Marikana," he said

.Lamola is part of a handful of supporters behind the #CccupyLuthuliHouse campaign, which is calling for the immediate resignation of president Jacob Zuma and his national executive committee. They claim the NEC failed to hold the party's president accountable.

Their attempt to occupy ANC headquarters have been met with maximum force, with water tankers, nyalas and public order police on scene.
