UWC protest shuts down campus - as it happened

A protest by University of the Western Cape students turned violent when protesters destroyed parts of buildings on campus. Police remain on high alert as reinforcements were called on throughout the day.

Four security officials were injured during protest at UWC, ER24 has reported.

Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics found four security officials with various injuries.

Two of them were treated for bone fractures. The others were treated for pepper spray exposure, lacerations and a shoulder injury allegedly caused by a brick.

UWC spokesperson, Luthando Tyalibongo, said a student who spoke to media saying students were upset that a meeting between Fees Must Fall and council failed to materialise was not a member of the SRC as she had claimed.

The University of the Western Cape says more than 5000 students managed to write exams on Wednesday morning, SABC reports.

Bail has been set at R500 each for the 11 students arrested thus far. Fees Must Fall students are expecting another 10 to be arrested, in violation of a court interdict.
