Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg policeman took his own life yesterday, only hours after police management held a couples’ counselling seminar to advocate against suicides.

The officer, believed to be from the police’s VIP protection unit, shot himself dead at his home near Westgate during the early hours of yesterday morning.

He allegedly shot himself with his service pistol while his wife and children were on the premises.

The suicide came on the night after uMgungundlovu South police management invited officers from across the province to a couples’ counselling seminar that advocated against suicides and attacks on partners or spouses.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said the police are deeply saddened by the incident and are investigating the reasons behind the tragedy.
