Kanyamazane – When the FOBC chicken and meat store was engulfed by flames at the Kanyamazane shopping complex in Mpumalanga on Wednesday afternoon, some bystanders saw the blaze as an opportunity to loot.

It was business as usual at the store when there was a loud explosion. The workers immediately ran out of the shop as a fire broke out.

However, several bystanders seized the opportunity to loot, as some literally ran into the flames to get their hands on free meat.

Lindiwe Nkosi, a local, said she was amazed by how people put their lives in danger during the blaze.

"It is not like they don't have food, how can a person risk that much just to get free meat?" she asked.

Others saw it differently: "Seriously you cannot let such an opportunity pass you; you see that you are about to get free meat and you just fold your arms? No. We went there but unfortunately the flames were really bad and dangerous," another local said.

Spokesperson for Kanyamazane police station Constable Ncobile Mnisi confirmed the incident.

"Luckily no one was injured," she said.

Mnisi said the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
