Durban – Two men were sentenced to long jail terms after being convicted in the Verulam Regional Court of robbery, kidnapping and rape, the KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority said on Friday.

KwaZulu-Natal NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said Sihle Biyela, 27, and Msawenkosi Gumede, 29, were sentenced on Friday to 30 and 40 years respectively for the crime they committed in 2013.

Kara said on the night of the incident Biyela and Gumede confronted a couple outside their Phoenix home and, at gunpoint, forced them into the house where the rest of the family had gathered.

"The complainants were held captive in the lounge by Biyela while Gumede took them one at a time into the other rooms, demanding cash and other valuables."

Kara said the victims were assaulted and Gumede forced them to hand over their belongings.

"The last person he took into a bedroom was a 17-year-old girl. After demanding cash and valuables, he raped her."

Biyela and Gumede then loaded several appliances into the vehicle of one of their victims, forcing him, at gunpoint, to drive them to the entrance of Amaoti township where they lived.

Kara said both accused were convicted of five counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping. Gumede was also found guilty of rape.

"Gumede had previously received three life sentences and was sentenced to 107 years in jail by the Durban High Court last year for other offences of rape and robbery that he committed in 2004 and 2012.”

Kara said the NPA welcomed the sentences.
