Pretoria - The heavy steel door of a supermarket in Ga-Rankuwa's Zone 6 stood cleaved open, with this being the latest store to be looted overnight.

Townships in Tshwane have been plunged into chaos, with police battling to combat widespread looting.

Police officers had dispersed a crowd which had gathered outside the same U-Save store on Wednesday afternoon, but had been drawn away by numerous reports of looting in other parts of the township.

It is evident that the mob returned and managed to storm the store, stealing as much as they could carry.

On Thursday morning discarded groceries lay piled at the entrance of the shop.

It is understood that after the discovery of the crime, police went from door to door in the neighbourhood, recovering any stolen goods and piling them up at the shop’s entrance.

The situation in the area remained tense, with a heavily armed group of officers guarding the scene while groups of people gathered around them.
