Pietermaritzburg - Former University of KwaZulu-Natal vice-chancellor Malegapuru Makgoba has been appointed as the country’s first health ombudsman.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced in March that the department would be advertising the position in which the incumbent would act as a “public protector” of health and take up complaints from unhappy patients.

Makgoba headed the University of KwaZulu-Natal for 10 years until 2014.

In a statement, the university’s chair of council Dr Ayanda Ntsaluba said Makgoba had played a significant role in opening doors for many young black scientists to engage in research.

“Professor Makgoba is a great patriot and an inspiration to many young leaders in our country. The university is both proud and honoured to have gained from such an esteemed academic, and wishes him every success in his new role.”
