Pietermaritzburg - A 29-year-old man admitted in the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday that he shot his girlfriend at her workplace in Underberg before turning the gun on himself.

Sifiso Ngubo had initially pleaded not guilty before Judge Nkosinathi Chili to murdering Zinhle Ndlovu (25) at Umzimkhulu River Lodge on December 14 last year.

But after the court heard the evidence of three witnesses, Ngubo instructed his attorney Xolani Sindane to make admissions on his behalf. In writing yesterday, Ngubo confessed that he had gone to Ndlovu’s place of employment on the day in question and had “shot her several times with a firearm”.

After shooting her he became afraid and tried to shoot himself, but succeeded only in injuring himself on the head and ended up in hospital, he said.

Ngubo said he was in a relationship with Ndlovu and they had two children together. “At some stage, I learnt that the deceased [Ndlovu] was having an affair with another man and I approached her about the issue. She confirmed having the affair and we resolved the matter. The problem arose when she became pregnant with the second child, since I had reservations that the child was mine,” he said.

Ngubo said Ndlovu initially assured him the baby was his, but after the child was born he told her it did not look like him.

On December 14 last year, he had contacted Ndlovu, who confirmed over the phone that he was not the child’s father. She had told him to meet her later that day to resolve the matter.

Ngubo said there was a pool competition that day and he and a friend had drunk a case of beer between them. He then went to see Ndlovu.

He was “angry” with her and entered the house with a gun in his hand. He shot her several times and thereafter shot himself on the head after realising what he had done.

Ngubo said although he had consumed alcohol he was “not drunk to such an extent that I do not recall what took place”.

Chili will deliver judgment in the case today.
