Man, 68, drowns after hurting spine

2016-02-05 09:53

Stilbaai - A 68-year-old man drowned in Stilbaai after injuring his spine while swimming, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Friday.

Teyo Smit's family and friends pulled him out of the water on Thursday and started giving him CPR, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

Paramedics took over but were unable to resuscitate him and he was declared dead on the scene.

"It is believed that the man may have suffered a spinal injury while swimming in the surf with friends," Lambinon said.

Police have opened an inquest docket and Smit's body was taken into the care of forensic pathology services.
