Johannesburg - A man accused of killing his 6-month-old baby boy showed no emotion when he appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Marthinus Pelser, 22, appeared briefly, wearing a blue shirt and dark blue Guess jeans.

Taking his jacket off while making his way up the stairs to the box, Pelser showed no emotion.

He was arrested in Honeydew last Wednesday after going on the run.

The baby's mother arrived home from work at 19:20 on Saturday, after leaving him in Pelser's care for the day.

"When she asked her husband where the child was, he told her that he was sleeping in the bedroom. It is alleged that when she went to check on the baby, she found the child wrapped in a blanket and not breathing," police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said at the time.

Paramedics were called and declared the child dead.

'Never push a man'

The infant had head injuries and burn wounds. Pelser allegedly went on the run in his partner's Kia. He was caught in Strubens Valley after the car ran out of petrol 5 days later.

Pelser posted an image on Facebook. It depicted a demonic-looking creature and was accompanied with the text: "Never push a man to violence who has been waiting for an excuse to use it."

As Pelser made his way back down the stairs to the holding cells, he gazed at the audience in a half full court for a moment, as if looking for a specific person.

He would remain in custody until his next appearance on July 28.
