One of three people linked to the murder of Bloemfontein Hawks Captain Qeya Jonas Tshabalala appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Sprinkaan Maema, 33, appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of murder, police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.

He would formally apply for bail on June 4.

Tshabalala was shot and killed at a house in Rocklands, Bloemfontein, last Thursday after he was confronted and attacked by three armed men.

"It is alleged that the member, who was off duty, was at a house in Tau Street, Rocklands, on the 24 May 2018 at about 20:45 when he was confronted and attacked by three armed men," Mbambo said.

"He was shot multiple times… and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The suspects then fled the scene with the state vehicle, his service pistol and a cellphone."

Mbambo said the vehicle was later found abandoned in Dewetsdorp.

Maema was arrested in the early hours of Friday between Dewetsdorp and Wepener, only a couple of kilometres from where the stolen car was found.

"Preliminary investigation conducted at the scene suggest that one of the suspects might have been shot during the incident," Mbambo said.

Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Moeletsi Sempe said the province had established a multi-disciplinary team to track down the two remaining suspects.

"It is during such times where we need to stand together as the community and identify these people, because they are threatening the safety and security of our children and the entire society," he said.
