Johannesburg - A 25-year-old man has been arrested in the Honeydew area following the rape of a teenage girl, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Earlier this week, a mother sent her two daughters to a spaza shop in a township near Lanseria. However, only her younger daughter returned, said Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela in a statement.

"The elder, aged 15, went missing.  [The mother’s] efforts to trace her were in vain."

A day later, information was received that the teenager was seen with the man who has now been arrested.

Police went to his home and found the girl there.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly raped."

The man was subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile Mavimbela said that police had recently been focusing on curbing alcohol-related crimes.

"We still maintain that the better part of domestic violence-related offences, street robberies -especially over the weekend, rapes, assaults and, in certain instances, attempted murder and murder, are generated by the use or abuse of alcohol," he said.
