Arrest in murder of DA councillor who was lured into death trap

Cape Town - The Hawks have arrested a man in connection with the murder of DA councillor Johannes Baaitjies on Friday.

Baaitjies, a councillor for Danielskuil in the Mgcawu District Municipality, was shot in his car and his body was dumped in a veld last week.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said that preliminary investigations had revealed that Baaitjies had been lured to the spot where he was killed.  

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the 49-year-old victim was unsuspectingly lured into the death trap.  

"Baaitjies took his business associate with to assist him through a business meeting arranged at the time of his untimely death. His business associate is still in critical condition at a local hospital," he said.

"The 29-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday and is expected to appear at Postmansburg Magistrate's Court on Monday. He is likely to face charges of murder and attempted murder.  

"It has also transpired that he is implicated in other armed robbery cases," Mulaudzi said.  

Baaitjies was found dead on the main road between Danielskuil and Postmasburg on Wednesday night, with two bullet wounds to the head and another to his upper body.

He was due to be sworn in as a councillor at the Kgatelopele municipality on Thursday, the DA's Northern Cape leader Andrew Louw said on Thursday.
