Durban – A spear-wielding man broke down the front door of an elderly couple’s Verulam home, raped the woman and stabbed and wounded her husband, a security company said.

He assaulted and stabbed the man with the spear and demanded valuables shortly before 03:00 on Wednesday, Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram said.

The attacker allegedly dragged the 70-year-old Indian woman into a nearby bush and raped her. The woman knew him.

She escaped her attacker and raised the alarm with her neighbour.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said no arrests had been made.

"The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. One of the victims sustained head injuries and they were taken to hospital for medical attention. A case of house robbery was opened at Ndwedwe police station for investigation."
