Johannesburg – A driver who got caught in congested traffic at the weekend apparently lost his cool, ignored control measures and swore at and assaulted officers, the Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The 59-year-old "huge and physically intimidating driver" had been driving with two passengers on the R24 westbound early on Saturday, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said on Sunday.

A 10-ton truck loaded with wood had lost control and overturned, resulting in lane closures and considerable congestion.

Kgasago said the man "broke every rule in the book with regards to traffic and moral issues".

He apparently disregarded the control measures in place and directions of metro police officers.

"Warning the driver by sounding sirens and blue lights for him to desist from his wrongdoings fell on deaf ears and the officers were left with only the option of arresting him.

He allegedly spewed "unprintable words" at the officers and assaulted them, said Kgasago.

They had to use pepper-spray to subdue him.

The man was charged with crimen injuria, assault and resisting arrest.

He was expected to appear in Germiston Magistrate's Court later on Monday.
