Vereeniging - A man has sustained critical injuries after he was hit and dragged by a train at the Vereeniging Train Station, south of Gauteng, paramedics said on Friday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the man had been walking on the tracks before he was hit and subsequently dragged for about 50m at around 02:30.

Paramedics arrived to find the man lying unconscious, a distance away from the platform. He had no form of identification on him, Meiring said.

"On assessment, paramedics found that the man had sustained numerous critical injuries."

He was treated on the scene with advanced life support before being airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment, Meiring said.
