Johannesburg - A man died while two others were taken to hospital after being caught by a rip current at Grotto beach, Hermanus, on Saturday.

According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), they were called to the scene to assist lifeguards who fetched the men from the currents where it is believed they were swimming.

“CPR efforts commenced on a 40-year-old male from Cape Town but sadly, despite extensive CPR efforts, the man was declared deceased by paramedics.”

The other two men were taken to hospital in serious condition, although they were stable.

One of the men was later released with the other to remain in hospital.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
