Cape Town – A Masiphumelele councillor was "shocked and very disappointed" when a man died after being set alight in the Western Cape township on Monday night.

A police van was also set alight, but there was no one in the vehicle at the time.

"This really caught me off guard. I didn’t see it coming," Councillor Mzuvukile Nikelo told News24 on Tuesday.

He claimed the unidentified man who died was a drug dealer that residents had forced out of the community a while back.

The attack took place around 18:40.

Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said no one had been arrested and police were investigating.

Nikelo said he was in the process of meeting leaders and those who started an anti-drug and crime campaign a while ago.

"I thought we were in a state where the community would work with the police and law enforcement agencies to take a stance against crime."

He said officers needed the intelligence gathered from residents.

"They never knew the area was infested with drugs and drug dealing until the community uprising," Nikelo said.
