Johannesburg - A man was killed and another injured when they were shot in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

Police were still investigating the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

"Two people were shot. One was shot dead at the scene and the other one was taken to hospital.

"We are investigating whether these people knew each other... We don't know what the motive for the shooting was,"  he said.

Paramedics said the men were found inside a vehicle off Field Street.

"Upon assessment of the men, believed to be in their 20s, it was found that one had sustained multiple gunshot wounds," ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

Nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.

The second man was in a critical condition. He was airlifted to hospital.
