Durban - A man who was badly burned in a fire at Durban University of Technology’s Steve Biko Campus last week has died from his wounds on Monday.

The man was identified as 38-year-old Naren Ramsumar.

John Volmink, Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology, said that the fire had broken out in a student village which was under construction.

"One student room and a passage were damaged by the fire," he said.

"Three workers were injured by the fire, one of whom sustained serious burns and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The three people who were injured in the fire are employed by an external contractor and are not connected to the University," Volmink said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that the contractor had been identified and detectives were investigating the circumstances in which he died.

"The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. An inquest docket was opened at Berea police station for investigation," he said.
