A 24-year-old man drowned at the Midmar Dam in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, paramedics say.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said their paramedics and the SAPS' search and rescue team arrived at the drowning scene shortly after 15:00.

He said bystanders on the scene explained to emergency workers that they swam out of the dam to retrieve a canoe when they noticed that one of their friends was missing.

"Search and Rescue divers found the body of the man in the dam. Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him, and he was declared dead on the scene," Vermaak said.

He added that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident was not yet known and would be investigated by the local authorities.
