Cape Town - A 31-year-old man drowned in Rooi Els in the Western Cape on New Year's Day, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

The NSRI was alerted to the incident at 18:43 on Friday, said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

The police and provincial government emergency services also responded to the scene.

"It was then confirmed that friends had rescued the man from the water but he had suffered from a fatal drowning accident," said Lambinon.

"Paramedics declared the man deceased before [his] body... was taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services."
