Port Alfred - A 24-year-old man, who claimed he had been assaulted, was found on the banks of the Kowie River in Port Alfred on Friday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI heard the man calling for help on the way back from rescuing a bushbuck which had been trapped in the river between the canal and the marina, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

"The man had reportedly fled from a group of men who had allegedly assaulted him the night before on the river bank, escaping the assault by swimming across the river," he said.

He had apparently been assaulted on Thursday night.

The man was taken to the rescue base and then transported to hospital.

Police were investigating a case of assault.
