Durban - A man has been arrested after being found in possession of more than R12m in undeclared cash which was hidden inside seven luggage bags at the King Shaka Airport, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Police received a tip-off on Saturday that a 30-year-old man would be travelling out of the country later that afternoon with a large sum of money he had not declared to customs officials, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

"Through intense investigation the members managed to trace the said passenger on a flight that was leaving King Shaka Airport and destined to Dubai.

"They approached the airline and had the passenger, who at the time had already boarded the flight, offload all his luggage," she said.

Officers found that the man had checked in seven bags containing South African rands amounting R12 229 200.

The man was arrested and charged with contravention of the Currency and Exchanges Act and was expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Mbhele could not immediately comment on the outcome of the man's appearance.
