Pietermaritzburg - A man arrested on theft charges at the weekend escaped from Northdale hospital yesterday while under police guard.

It is believed the man told his guards he needed to use the toilet and disappeared soon after.

The 27-year-old was arrested during the early hours of Sunday morning by members of the Combined Action Team after he allegedly broke into two vehicles in Taj Road, Raisethorpe.

A police dog was set on the man when he fled from the officers, and he sustained bites to the face and neck. He was then arrested and taken to the Northdale hospital under police guard.

According to police spokesperson Gay Ebrahim, the man escaped from the hospital yesterday under the pretext of using the toilet.

Ebrahim said the man had been linked to several cases of thefts out of motor vehicles in the northern suburbs.
