Bloemfontein – A man appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for alleged illegal gold dealing, the Hawks said.

The matter against Thabane Mosimango, 35, was postponed to September 1 for a bail application, said spokesperson Captain S’fiso Nyakane.

Mosimango was arrested in July, while trying to flee the country. He had been on the run for a month, said Nyakane.

In June, the Hawks arrested his wife, Lindiwe Skhosana, at their home at 4 Diaas Street, Dagbreek, in Welkom.

She was allegedly found in possession of 50kg of gold-bearing material‚ gold processing equipment, and R1 082 400 in cash, which was allegedly hidden in an old geyser next to their house.

Skhosana was released on R2 000 bail.

The couple faces charges of acquisition‚ possession‚ and disposal of unwrought precious metal.
