Cape Town - A Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for fatally stabbing a woman 19 times and running off with her television.

The Northern Cape High Court handed down the sentence to Joel Mokomela, 38, on Friday, said provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Sergio Kock.

He received 18 years for murder and three years for theft, which would run concurrently.

Mokomela repeatedly stabbed Thandeka Plaatjie at her home in Jan Kempdorp a few days after Christmas on December 29.

He then fled with her flat-screen TV.

Kock said Mokomela was arrested soon after the incident.

“The SAPS views crimes against women and children in a very serious light and will continue in their endeavours to ensure that everyone in the community is safe and secure,” he said.
