Kimberley - A 30-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced by the Northern Cape High Court to 18 years in prison for murdering his mother, police in the Northern Cape said.

Reason Mthonxa was found guilty of murder and five counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, said Captain Olebogeng Tawana in a statement.

Tawana said Mthonxa was arrested in August 2016 after he assaulted his family and friends with a knife and a sjambok.

The High Court gave him five years each for the assault charges. The sentences would run concurrently.

"The sentence will serve as a deterrent against the perpetrators of crime," said provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Peter Shivuri.
