Durban - The owner of a wedding venue in Umhlali, KwaZulu-Natal, was killed during a shooting on Saturday evening, IPSS Medical Rescue said on Sunday.

IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said when paramedics arrived at the venue, the elderly man was found lying outside next to the pool.

He had been shot in the chest with a high calibre firearm and was declared dead on the scene.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said four men entered Maroupi Wedding Venue and demanded money from the owner.

"The owner refused to give them money and then they shot and killed him. They were also unable to open the safe," Zwane said.

Herbst said four of the guests were tied up and assaulted before the armed intruders ran away with small valuable items.

The guests were having a braai with the owner when the incident took place at around 21:00 on Saturday.

It was believed that the suspects were armed with a shotgun, handgun and a baton. They fled through a hole in the fence.

No arrests had been made.
