A 42-year-old man was killed and a child was injured in a suspected gang shooting in Athlone on Friday afternoon.

An unknown suspect fired shots in Bokmakierie Road, Athlone, around 14:00, Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut said.

"During the same incident, a child was caught in the crossfire and wounded. The child was admitted to hospital for treatment."

Detectives are investigating the circumstances.

The neighbourhood watch in the area said it was a "no-go zone" and urged residents to stay indoors and to be vigilant because the situation was volatile.
