Cape Town – A man was killed and another injured after a trench they were working in collapsed in Knysna, paramedic services said on Tuesday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the two men had been working in the 3m-deep trench on 7th Avenue when it collapsed, trapping one man completely, while the second man's arm and leg were trapped.

Meiring said rescue officers from fire and metro services had to use specialised rescue equipment to dig out the body of one of the men, who was declared dead at the scene.

The second man, who had already been dug out by co-workers, had sustained only minor injuries.

"He was transported by ER24 to a nearby hospital for further treatment."

Meiring said emergency services officials had found a backhoe near the collapsed trench.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
